Budô Curriculum
Aikidō
Jan Gerrit started aikidō in 1995 in the Groningen dōjō of Chris de Jongh sensei and Harry Kat sensei. This is where he developed a deep connection with his sempai Christiaan Zandt. His wife, Hilde Schmidt, came into the dojo and into his life in 2005 — she has shared a passion for budō with him ever since.
From 1997 on, he started instruction of children’s and adult classes in the Groningen dōjō and some jūdō clubs located nearby. He was issued the national aikidō teaching licences for kyū and dan-i levels in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
His aikidō has been influenced by Tamura Nobuyoshi shihan, Sugano Seiichi shihan, and mainly by Claude Pellerin shihan. Jan Gerrit has been involved in the organisation of many of his seminars and yearly summer camps in The Netherlands.
From 1999 to 2016, he has been a member of the regional and national committees to organise and promote the spread of aikidō in the Netherlands. As of 2021, he is a member of the national grading committee, responsible for policies and examination of dan-i grades.
He has passed the shodan shinsa in 2000, nidan in 2002, sandan in 2005, yondan in 2009, and was promoted godan by the Aikikai in 2020.
Shintō Musō Ryū Jō
In 2000, Christiaan and Jan Gerrit were very much inspired by several demonstrations Shintō Musō Ryū by Fred Quant sensei. Following Christiaan’s decision to become Fred’s formal student, Jan Gerrit started jōdō in 2002. By Fred’s retirement from active teaching in 2022, he had completed the full curriculum of Shintō Musō Ryū and all fuzoku ryūha except for Ittatsu Ryū Hōjōjutsu.
Jan Gerrit has travelled to Amsterdam regularly with Christiaan and Hilde to attend classes biweekly. Over the years, he developed a strong friendship with his sempai, Jeffrey Schwerzel, who took over the Amsterdam dōjō in 2022.
Christiaan and Jan Gerrit started the Jōdō Groningen group in 2005 and have been running it with Hilde from 2013. Since 2022, the Dutch groups get together for an intensive keikokai every other weekend.
He has passed the shodan shiken in 2007, nidan in 2010, sandan in 2012. Jan Gerrit received Okuiri-sho from Pascal Krieger sensei and Fred Quant sensei in 2013, Shomokuroku from both sensei in 2022. He was appointed FEJ National Coordinator in 2023 for The Netherlands and FEJ Official Teacher at the Kácov gasshuku in July 2024.
